2023 ISDE Results: Day one belongs to Team USA in San Juan

Results from day one of the 2023 International Six Days Enduro in San Juan, Argentina where the USA World Trophy team take the early lead with Josep Garcia claiming the scratch best result from Andrea Verona.

2023 ISDE day 1 in a nutshell:

It was de ja vu on day one at the 2023 ISDE “the Olympics of Enduro” with Josep Garcia and Andrea Verona picking right back up where they left off from the previous two editions dominating the individual results.
It was a blindingly hot day, pushing 40 Celsius and a big body shock for some of the nations’ riders and it has caused some retirements already.
The heat didn’t affect the overall World Trophy team result too much because USA stormed it with a very impressive collective effort on the first day. Dante Oliveira, Cole Martinez and Taylor Robert lie third, fourth and fifth scratch, Johnny Girroir (the only one of the four riders not used to riding conditions like this to be fair on him) is P8 which puts them in a clear lead overall. “It’s been a great day for the team,” said Oliveira. “The liaison sections were tough with nowhere to rest, but the conditions are similar to what we can get back home. With the same course to ride tomorrow, it’s going to be a tough day!”
Britain’s reigning trophy team winners coming ot Argentina saw a solid first day with Jamie McCanney, Nathan Watson and Jed Etchells all within the top 10 scratch for second overall, just under two minutes down.
Third and just under one minute further back, it was also a good opening day for the French World Trophy men with Theo Espinasse clocking best times to lead his team with veteran Loic Larrieu right behind in P10 and P11 scratch respetively.
The two lead riders, Garcia and Verona, both saw their collective team efforts dented on day one. Spaniard Sergio Navarro and Italian Samuele Bernadini hit problems in different tests ( a deteched fuel line and a broken chain) but both riders and teams remain in the race.
Junior 2 class world champion Albin Norrbin heads a blinding first day’s performance from the Swedish Junior riders – a tema you might think would be least used to near 40 degree temperatures. In fact Albin, Axel Semb and Max Ahlin locked out the top three places individually in the Junior category.
Given EnduroGP Junior and Youth formbooks this season, Team France might have been closer but they sit third behind reigning Junior Trophy holders Italy although the Swedes are already 2:28 clear.
It will come as no surprise to anyone who’s followed the Women’s World Trophy results for the last three years to learn Brandy Richards is already clear of her female rivals.
But it is the collective effort that counts her and the Aussie women – Jessica Gardiner, Tayla Jones and 16-year-old Danielle Mcdonald – are putting it together to hold a narrow lead three seconds lead ahead of USA with France 12 minutes down in third.
Tough news for two major Women riders who went out today, meaning their team effort is over already. That was Emily Hall from the reigning champion’s Team GB squad and contender for the overall podium Mari Franke from Germany.
They weren’t alone in seeing members going out in some incredible heat out here which is surely playing. Role for riders not used to it.
USA riders are swarming all over the Club Trophy with former USA Trophy team member Josh Toth heading the scratch result and be the first of three AMA Clubs squads in the rankings.
