ACU plugs into electric future with new battery-powered bike sport panel

The UK governing body for motorcycle sport is backing battery power with the announcement of a new panel catering specifically to the growth and future support of electric competition across all levels (and types) of racing.

The new group will provide riders, organisers, promoters, and manufacturers involved in competition with a direct voice inside the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU).

That’s not to say that EVs are exactly lacking at events outright, but the ACU believes that current participation levels may soon skyrocket as electric bikes become increasingly capable and accessible.

ACU Chief Executive Matthew Edwards-Wear said: “Electric motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in motorcycle sport. 

“We want to ensure [those] involved in this area have a platform within the ACU and a structure that supports their ambitions. The creation of the electric motorcycle panel is an important first step.”

One of the biggest attractions for the group is bound to be the potential for non-petrol machines to help overcome long-standing access issues facing organisers and venues across the nation, including the ever-present problem of noise complaints. 

Edwards-Wear added: “One of the most exciting aspects of electric competition is its potential to take motorcycle sport to places that have traditionally been difficult for us to access. Lower sound levels create opportunities to engage with communities, organisers and venues that may not previously have considered hosting motorcycle sport events.”
